The Power of Words

Starting Each Day With A Little Thinking...

Gift

Is there anything more satisfying in life than seeing the sheer happiness that is associated with someone receiving a gift?  The gift can be a toy or a tool, small or big, expensive or cheap, physical or personal.  Interestingly, the LONG TERM effect of the gift is dependent on whether it satisfies a need or a want of the recipient.

When the gift is targeted at a want, often times its effect is more transient.  More fleeting.  That is because our wants or desires often change from moment to moment.  Think of a kid who wants the latest electronic gadget.  Conversely, when the gift is targeted at a need, its impact is normally long lasting.  Think of the time someone spent with you to help you develop personally.  That gift of time has probably had an impact that you never even considered when you received it

With that in mind:

What kind of gift are you going to give?

As always, thanks for the time.

First

It’s amazing the emphasis that is placed on “finishing first”.  Now mind you, I’m not a big fan of the “Johnny and Janey are awesome and do everything perfectly” school of thought.   The “everyone is a winner” school of thought is a bunch of poppycock.  However, the win at all cost mentality just doesn’t resonate with me.

That’s probably because I’ve taken to looking at “first” a bit differently.  Previously, it WAS my primary focus.  I was absolutely hell bent on winning.  On finishing first.  Over time, that has changed.  Now my focus on “first” has more to do with “what should I be doing first?”  That’s an entirely different question that leads to entirely different actions and entirely different outcomes.

Outcomes that result in a more balanced, happy, and satisfying life.

With that in mind:

  • What is first for you?

As always, thanks for the time.

Hide

Sometimes things go a certain way and you just want to crawl in to a hole and hide.  Why?  Do you think that you are the only one who has ever made a mistake?  Is the situation so terrible that it will affect your life a week from now?  Wouldn’t it be more fun to stay out in the open and laugh at the absurdity of what you just did?  Is hiding really going to help in any way, shape, or form.

We all screw up.  We all have bad days.  We all get embarrassed.  The reality is it’s often not the mistake that people remember.  It’s how we respond to the mistake that they remember.

And rarely is hiding remembered as a good thing.

With that in mind:

  • Why hide when you can stay out in the open and enjoy the view?

As always, thanks for the time.

Prescribe

When you go to the doctor, it’s often the case that he “prescribes” you some medicine.  What’s interesting is how many people think they are “doctors of life” and are more than happy to prescribe to you an appropriate course of action.

Now don’t get me wrong, taking input/feedback from others is one of the best ways to learn, grow, and live better.  However, just because they’re prescribing doesn’t mean that I’m subscribing!

There are a thousand different ways to get to just about any destination.  And while others may THINK they know the best prescription for you, the reality is you are often your own best doctor when it comes to the best path to follow.

Conversely, while you may find a certain path works wonderfully for you, you may want to rethink things prior to prescribing said path to others.  Like the doctor you should always make sure that you “do no harm” when you decide to offer counsel on the path.

With that in mind:

  • Are you healthy enough to prescribe medicine to others?

As always, thanks for the time.
