You all remember Newton’s first law of motion “An object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by some force”, correct?  Even if your memories from physics are a bit weak (or terrifying!), my guess is that you DO recognize the power of momentum.  And Mr. Newton provides us with an insight that is invaluable….

Once we get in to a habit, we keep at it.  Notice I didn’t say whether the habit was good OR bad.  Just that we keep at it.  It could be that we spend time reflecting daily, we exercise regularly, we save consistently.  Or it could be that we smoke, we yell at the kids, or we waste time on activities that don’t help us learn, grow, or live more fullly.

Enter Mr. Newton:

  • UNLESS ACTED UPON BY SOME FORCE
To build a new habit, WE have to exert that force.  However, once we exert even the smallest force, we begin to reshape the habit.  Further, if we continue to apply that new force, the momentum builds in a new direction.  Now mind you, the new habit is not going to emerge overnight.  Further, there’s going to be conflicting forces that slow the momentum.  The key here is that it’s the forces NOT the habit that make a difference.  The habit is the output.  The forces or actions are what build the habit.  And small actions can have a big impact:

With that in mind:

  • What force will you apply to build momentum along the path you want to travel?

As always, thanks for the time.
